Origin And History

Bernedoodles are one of the newest breed bred by the Sherry Rupke of Swissridge Kennels in the 2003 crossing between the Bernese Mountain dogs and the Poodles.

Being a relatively new breed, it is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but it is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the International Designer Canine Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, and American Canine Hybrid.

Behavior And Personality Of Bernedoodle

Bernedoodle seems to have a combined personality and behavior of both Bernese Mountain dog and the poodle. They have polite, hardworking and quiet behavior. They love their family and are very protective of their territory.

Bernedoodle is happiest when they are with their family. These breeds tend to develop separation anxiety when left alone for a prolonged period of time.

The personality of Bernedoodle can be described as calm, gentle and friendly towards everyone but are little goofy by nature. Bernedoodle inherits the stubbornness from the Bernese Mountain dog which makes them an independent dogs.

Though they are independent, they prefer spending time with their loved ones but are wary of strangers. Early socialization is must if you want your pooch to become a great family companion.

Bernedoodle is very intelligent and interactive breeds and it becomes very easy to train a Bernedoodle. They are quick learners and will willingly obey your each and every cue. But, consistent and firm leadership is required while training these pets.

Bernedoodle can be quite stubborn if you show harsh behavior while training them. They will simply ignore your calls and commands if not treated properly. Patience is required while training a Bernedoodle.

Common Health Issues

Bernedoodles are considered as a healthy breed with no serious diseases. Since the crossbreeds dogs have low risks of serious health issues, these breeds may suffer from common health issues like elbow and hip dysplasia and eye problems as they age. The instances of cancer in Bernedoodle is way lesser than in the Bernese Mountain dog.
