The Bluetick Coonhound got its name from its coat like many other Coonhounds. They are medium-sized hunting dogs, bred to trail raccoons and other small game.

Bluetick Coonhound is developed in the 18th century in the southern United States. They were developed from imported English and French hounds. The American Kennel Club recognized Bluetick Coonhound in 2009 and registered them under the hound group.

Bluetick Coonhound is a good-looking, muscular dog whose ears are large and hanging. The coat is short to medium length and is shiny and glossy. The average height of a Bluetick Coonhound is 21-27 inches and weight is between 45-80 pounds. The average life span of Bluetick Coonhound is between 12- 14 years.

Temperament of Bluetick Coonhound

Blueticks are of gentle and loyal temperament with high energy and can make a great companion if you are off to hiking, jogging or even hunting. Although a natural hunting dog, they can also help you in the household work. They have an athletic body and need a good amount of activity to keep their body in shape. They are friendly with other pet dogs at home and do well with cats too.

Behavior

As hunting dog which was bred only for hunting purpose, Bluetick Coonhound has high prey drive. They can wander off trailing the scent or chasing some prey, so a properly fenced area is needed to keep them inside. They are very vocal and they used their howl to inform the hunter about the spot of the prey.

As a muscular, athletic dog, Bluetick needs a lot of exercise and other activity to do. They have high energy level, so they love to be engaged in some sort of work to keep their body fit and mind focused. Training

Bluetick Coonhound is easy to train as they are smart, quick and eager to please their owner. However, they are sensitive so using harsh word and force hand will only make training difficult. Use positive methods of training where you should include a delicious treat, a lot of vocal praise and a gentle pat on their back. This will encourage and motivate them which makes training them easy.

Is Bluetick Coonhound Child-Friendly?

Bluetick Coonhound does great with children and are loving and tolerant of children and also are playful. They do not mind kids pulling their hair and tails.

Children should always be supervised and taught how to approach dogs. However friendly the dog is, never leave your children with them alone without anyone to look after them.
