The Caucasian Shepherd dog is a massive dog that was originally bred to watch and guard livestock against mountain lions and bears. It can give birth to 4-6 puppies at a time.
Well before their transformation into this fierce protector, this breed is a cute, fluffy, and playful little puppy. Since the Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a large-sized dog breed, their development process of both mind and body is slow.
Newborn
The newly born Caucasian Shepherd Dog is completely deaf, blind, and are not able to defecate on their own. The mother helps them to pee and poo by licking their belly.
At this stage, the puppy completely relies on its mother for heat as its body cannot produce heat on its own. Even if the mother is far away, the puppies use their sense of smell and drag themselves towards her.
In this stage, the puppy cannot bark, so make a sound by squealing when it wants to call the mother. The newborn stage is a very crucial stage for any puppy. They need good care, a proper sleep which is around 90% of the day for the proper development of their brain and body.
Neonatal Stage (0-3 Weeks)
The stage between the period of the Caucasian Shepherd puppy’s birth to 3 weeks is called a neonatal stage. At this time, the puppies are completely dependent on their mother as they cannot see, hear or walk. They should not be kept away from the mother because they might die of hypothermia which is caused when the body is cold.
The only food that the puppies should consume is their mother’s milk. Any sold food or even other liquid food might be risky for their health. The mother’s milk is very rich in colostrum which protects them from different health problems and heals body infections.
Transitional Stage (3-6 Weeks)
This is the stage where the Caucasian Shepherd puppy starts to open its eyes and starts to hear noises from other mates. The puppy is introduced to a completely new world at their period. The teeth are not fully developed so they still rely on mother’s milk. Solid food should not be given in the first few weeks of the transitional period.
The puppy get to know its mother better at this period and start recognizing its littermates. After few weeks of the transitional stage, the puppy begins to taste solid food from the plate of its mother.
Do not let the puppies interact with too many people outside home as it might affect their ability to differentiate between family and outsider.
Socialization Stage (6-28 Weeks)
The socialization stage which is between 6-28 weeks is a perfect period for exposiing the Caucasian Shepherd puppy to the outside world. The puppies are very mischavious at this time where they playfully bite their littermates, chew stuffs at home and swallow them. Therefore close supervision is necessary.
This period is also a good time to start training the puppy from a very basic command. They are very active and eager to please their owner, so training at this time is good start.
Start vaccinating the Caucasian Shepherd puppy between 6-8 weeks with distemper, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. The next dose should be between 12-14 weeks old.
Juvenile Stage (4-8 Months)
The stage where the Caucasian Shepherd puppy becomes more active plus independent is between 4-8 months. At this time, it becomes hard to control them as they will ignore you and challenge you with their mischievous behavior. Therefore, this is a right time to establish a leadership upon the puppy.
While training, never use rough words and shout at Caucasian Shepherd puppy, no matter what they do. After all it is just a puppy that need patient and proper training from it master.
At about 4-6 months, another round of vaccine should be give after consulting a vet. The Caucasian Shepherd puppy is growing rapidly during this period where they weigh around 23-27 kgs.
Adolescence Stage (8-16Months)
The adolescent stage is a period where your little Caucasian puppy has grown into an adult. Although they reach adolescence, it still exabits puppy behavior for about sometime. The puppy will show its adult personality by the time it reaches 16-18 months old.
Continue your Caucasian Shepherd’s training with socialization, agility, and other tricks. A good leadership and training will ensure a good relationship between your dog and family members.
