The larger Griffon Fauve de Bretagne or Fawn Brittany Griffon is an extinct breed of scenthound dogs which was used as a hunting dog. They were mostly used to hunt boars and wolf in different French Region.

Griffon Fauve de Bretagne was medium size dogs and both males and females have the same size. They were used in packs to hunt and Francios I was known to keep one of those packs.

Origin & History

Griffon Fauve de Bretagne, which is considered as one of the oldest scenthound dog breeds were originated in the Brittany, the French region. As mentioned earlier, this dog was used to hunt boar and wolves.

Besides being a great hunting dog this breed was also a good family and companion dog. The use of this dog became less when the population of wolf and boar became drastically low and the hunting era stopped.

How Did The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne Become Extinct?

The major reason for the extinction of Larger Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is that they became less used because boar and wolf hunting was not required in the 19th century.

The medium sized Griffon Fauve de Bretagne are still available though. Only the larger one could not be protected.

Griffon Fauve de Bretagne has very active and enthusiastic temperament with lost of stamina and energy. They are also considered as a jogging companion because of its unlimited energy and exercise requirement.
