Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound is a medium-sized scenthound dog that is not commonly kept as a family companion. It looks little scruffy due to its wary, long hair that covers its body. Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound was on the verge of extinction during World War I and II.

The FCI recognized Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound as a single breed in 1948. There was a dispute with the FCI by Slovenia about Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound being originally from Slovenia. However, in 2003, the FCI concluded that the Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound was originally from Croatia.
