Pont-Audermer Spaniel is a medium-sized dog breed that is a rare gundog of France. It is an excellent hunting breed that is only suitable for an experienced owner who known to handle dogs and is involved in physical activities. They are not at all suitable for a novice dog owner as a family companion.

The appearance of the Pont-Audermer Spaniel is compact, moderately muscular with a broad and deep chest. They have well-padded paws with furs between the toes. They are distinct from most of the UK and USA sporting breeds in the pointing quality of the muzzle and length.

Origin and History

Pont-Audermer Spaniel was originated in France in the Pont-Audemer region during the 19th century. Although the exact origin of this breed is not traced, it is believed that the English Setter and the Irish Setter had a great part in the development of Pont-Audermer Spaniel.

Although known as a spaniel, it was more used as a setter than as a spaniel that does field-type work.

This breed has gained its popularity in the Picardy and Normandy district of its homeland. However, in other parts of the French and outside French, it is not very popular and unknown by many. Therefore, Pont-Audermer Spaniel is considered a rare breed.

After World War II, the number of Pont-Audermer Spaniel declined so quickly that the president of the Pont-Audermer Spaniel Club has to allow interbreeding to prevent it from extinction.

However, the number still remained low and the club had to merge with the Picardy Spaniel Club in 1980. Pont-Audermer Spaniel is recognized by the FCI, UKC, and the American Rare Breed Association.

Temperament: The temperament of the Pont-Audermer Spaniel is a hard-working, comical, and very gentle dog. They are known to be very funny and comical dogs due to which it got the nickname, ‘le petit clown des marais’ or the little clown of the marshes.

Behavior: Pont-Audermer Spaniel is an active dog that needs to be involved in regular physical activities. If they do not get the activities that they need, they become anxious and destructive.

Personality: The personality of the Pont-Audermer Spaniel is affectionate, friendly, and intelligent. Despite their excellence in hunting, Pont-Audermer Spaniel is not known to be aggressive. They are a gentle and loving dog that is fun and entertaining.

Trainability

Pont-Audermer Spaniel is very eager to please their owner and is smart which makes training easy. They cannot be handled by an inexperienced owner and needs an expert dog owner that can train them with consistency. They easily get bored with the repetitive training, so involve them agility and tricks which challenges their mind.
