Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund is small to a medium-sized dog whose English translation is Small Swiss Hound. This breed has a lot of different varieties that can be distinguished by their coat type although all are the same breeds.

It is very much similar to the Schweizer Laufhund but is smaller with shorter legs. They are a little longer than they are taller with muscular and stronger built. Their tail goes low as they carry a calm pace and lifts as they run.

Origin and History

The Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund was originated in Switzerland as a scenthound. It is descended from the Schweizer Laufhund which is more faster and agile. When the hunting was restricted in districts, the hunters needed a new type of hound that is shorter and slower than the hound that was used until then. So, Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund was created by crossbreeding short Schweizer Laufhund and Basset Hounds.

It was bred to follow the scent in the rough land and find them. Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund is also often used for tracking wounded animals. The United Kennel Club recognized this breed in 2006 under the group of scenthounds.

Temperament, Behavior, and Personality

Temperament: The temperament of the Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund affectionate, gentle, active, and alert. They are a passionate and devoted hunter with a keen sense of smell. They are a very sweet and loving dog that is never aggressive.

Behavior: Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund is an active dog that is also very vocal with a pleasant voice. They start making if they find something interesting or something suspicious which makes them a great watchdog.

Personality: The personality of the Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund friendly, independent, and courageous. They are very devoted and loving towards their leader. They can be trusted with other dogs in the house but they cannot be trusted with small animals like rats and rabbits due to their high prey drive.

Trainability

Training Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund is not a difficult job to do as long as they are trained by an experienced trainer. They are an independent dog that needs to be trained with lots of patient and consistency. Use a positive method of training as a source of motivation for them. Start training from an early age as they are very eager to please at their small age.

Is Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund Child-Friendly?

Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund gets along well with children as they are playful and loving towards them. However, they are not suitable in a house with small kids and toddlers due to their lively and energetic nature. Supervision is always necessary when leaving your dog and kids to interact with each other.

Facts

Although Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund is very popular in Switzerland, it is not known internationally.
It has no yet been recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Health Issues

Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund can face the following health situation:

Ear Infection: The Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund has long hanging ears that catch dirt very easily. It should be cleaned after you take them outdoors. If their ears are not cleaned regularly, they can get ears infection through all the dirt and bacteria from them.
Hip Dysplasia: It is a genetic situation where the hip joints of the dog are either underdeveloped or dislocated from its original place. It causes lameness and as it gets severe, there remains a sharp pain on the back making it difficult to move from one place to another.
