Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund is small to a medium-sized dog whose English translation is Small Swiss Hound. This breed has a lot of different varieties that can be distinguished by their coat type although all are the same breeds.

It is very much similar to the Schweizer Laufhund but is smaller with shorter legs. They are a little longer than they are taller with muscular and stronger built. Their tail goes low as they carry a calm pace and lifts as they run.

Origin and History

The Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund was originated in Switzerland as a scenthound. It is descended from the Schweizer Laufhund which is more faster and agile. When the hunting was restricted in districts, the hunters needed a new type of hound that is shorter and slower than the hound that was used until then. So, Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund was created by crossbreeding short Schweizer Laufhund and Basset Hounds.

It was bred to follow the scent in the rough land and find them. Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund is also often used for tracking wounded animals. The United Kennel Club recognized this breed in 2006 under the group of scenthounds.
