The American Alsatian or Alsatian Shepalute is a large-sized breed that is bred recently with the motive of getting a well-tempered, friendly dog. It is bred for a perfect family companion. They are best suited in a house with active family members that can meet up with their activity level.

Alsatian Shepalute is a giant breed with a strong and muscular body. They bear a close resemblance to the now-extinct dire wolf. They have almond-shaped eyes, thick muzzle, erect ears that give it an alert expression.

Origin and History

The American Alsatian was originated in the United States in the 1980s. It is a new breed that is bred by Lois Denny who is a dog trainer and groomer by profession.

Alsatian Shepalute is the part of the Dire Wolf project and was created by mixing German Shepherd, Alaskan Malamute, Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, and Mastiff dogs.

At first, it was in the category of the designer breeds bu now in its 5th generation, it falls under the purebred category.

Is American Alsatian Child-Friendly?

American Alsatian is a child-friendly dog as it is a very gentle, loving dog with children. They enjoy playing with them or just sitting by their side. As they are tolerant of kids harsh behavior, they are not likely to get aggressive towards.

Although they need to be supervised when they are interacting with each other to avoid any unintentional hurting from either party.

Temperament, Behavior, and Personality

Temperament: The temperament of the American Alsatian is mild, friendly, and very affectionate. Although it has a wolf-like expression and wolf-stare, it is a very loving and gentle breed that makes an exellent family companion from small kids to old people.

Behavior: The Alsatian Shepalute loves the company of its people and is a dog with a high activity level. They need an energetic owner who can take them for hiking, walking or running. They need a good amount of exercise, otherwise American Alsatian tends to become depressed and anxious.

Personality: The personality of the American Alsatian is clammed, fearless, and alert. With the best companion, they also make excellent watchdogs and guard dogs. If they feel that their family is being threatened, they will try to defend them without any fear.

Trainability

American Alsatian is not a tough dog to train if the owner is an experienced person. The owner should establish a firm and consistent leadership. They respond well to positive methods of training, so be patient with them and reward them with delicious treats as a source of motivation.

Facts

American Alsatian has unique eye colors that are light brown and sometimes comes in a yellow color too.
It has not yet been recognized by any major Kennel Club including American Kennel Club.

Health Issues

The Alsatian Shepalute is generally a healthy breed which can face some canine health problems in their lifetime.

Bloat: It is also called gastric dilatation where the belly of your dog balloons up looking like a swollen stomach. It causes pain and makes it difficult for your dog to breathe. Consult a veterinarian for proper and effective treatment.
Hip dysplasia: It is mostly genetic which causes due to underdeveloped or dislocation of the hip joints. At first, there will be lameness seen in your dog and slowly your dog will feel a sharp pain on the back. Before buying a puppy, check for its parent’s health problems.
