Entlebucher Mountain – Dog Behavior
The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is originated from Entlebuch valley of Switzerland as a herding dog and a watchdog. It is the smallest of the four Swiss Mountain dogs that include the Bernese Mountain Dog, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and the Appenzeller Sennenhunde.
This is a rare dog breed but is popular in its native country. The American Kennel Club recognized Entlebucher Mountain Dog in 2011 as a member of herding group and currently ranks 161 of 193.
Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a medium-sized, muscular breed. The hind leg is muscular and slopes slightly downwards. The coat is short and dense which comes in black, white and tan colors with brown and white markings. The average height of the Entlebucher Mountain Dog is 17-20 inches and the average height is 45-65 pounds. The average life span is between 10-15 years.
Temperament of Entlebucher Mountain
Entlebucher Mountain is of independent, devoted and loyal temperament. They love the company of people and are highly devoted to them. Although they are independent and confident in nature, they form a strong bond with their people. Entlebucher Mountain Dog, as a herding breed and a watch dog, they are very protective of small children and even family pets. They love to work and are happy if involved in household activity.
Behavior: Entlebucher Mountain loves to be with his family and wants to be with them. Behavioral problems rise when he doesn’t get enough attention from his family. He may become depressed and even show some destructive behavior like scratching the floor, biting stuff and barking. Therefore, they should be given the attention they need and should spend some time playing or even sitting with them.
Activity Requirement: Entlebucher Mountain is an active and energetic dog that need regular exercise. They should be taken for a walk or to play dog games in the park. If there is a big space in front of the house, you should leave him off leash to run and play around. However, include him in the household work often. This way they remain happy and active.
Personality of Entlebucher Mountain Dog
Entlebucher Mountain dog protective of its people and territorial. They are self-confident, loyal and agile while herding cattle. Entlebucher Mountain is not a usual barker and if he barks than know that he is confident in what he is barking at. They get well with other pets if they are raised together and if not, they should be introduced properly.
Training: Training Entlebucher Mountain dog is a tough task to do as they are independent and self-confident that do not want to listen to others. However, if you present yourself as a leader with consistency and confidence, he is sure to follow you and see you as his leader. Just because you are a leader doesn’t mean you have to be harsh. They will be scared and will not be able to focus on training. So, be gentle and use positive methods of training with lots of praises to motivate them.
Is Entlebucher Mountain Dog Child-Friendly?
Entlebucher Mountain Dog is friendly and playful with children. They are loving towards them and love to play with them. However, due to their strong herding instinct, they can sometime try to herd small children. therefore, supervision is necessary when leaving your dog and your child play.

Entlebucher Mountain is a calm dog and are not usually aggressive. However, they can be aggressive if someone provokes them or use harsh and forceful hand. They are protective of their loving ones, so when they see threats coming towards them, Entlebucher Mountain dog can become aggressive.
