The American English Coonhounds are also called the English Coonhound or Redtick Coonhound. It is a direct descendant of the English Foxhound. After the Foxhounds were brought to the United States by early settlers in the 1600s. Hunters used them to develop a new breed that had the size, stamina, and strength to hunt the fox.

In 1905, the breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club as the Coonhound and English Fox. In 1995, the foundation stock service of the American Kennel Club accepted the breed as the American English Coonhound. It was officially recognized as the AKC’s 171st hound breed.
