Cairn Terrier puppies are adorable puppies with pointed ears and shaggy fur. Surely a newborn brings bliss in the home, however, it also brings responsibility along.

Having new furry members is obviously an excitement for every one of us. However, there are certain things such as behavior changes through different stages, you need to know.

The Neonatal Stage – 0 to 2 Weeks

When a Cairn Terrier puppy is born, they are blind and deaf. The puppies will sleep 90% of the time and only wake to drink milk from their mother. In addition, the newborn Cairn puppies will pile up to their littermates to regulate body temperature.

The neonatal stage is very delicate for newborn Cairn Terrier puppies as they will be going through a lot of development stages. Furthermore, they would require a lot of care and attention.

It is very important that you notice if any puppy is separated from their mother or littermates. In that case, you will have to keep the puppy in a warm place and bottle feed them. Or else, they are likely to die due to cold.

Transitional Stage – 2 to 4 Weeks

The transitional stage is a very interesting stage where you get to see development in your Cairn Terrier for the first time. Your puppies will be able to hear open their eyes for the first time.

In addition, you will notice that your Cairn Terrier puppies will start walking around for the first time as well.

The Cairn Terrier will start to explore the surround by the end of the fourth week. Moreover, the puppies will spend most of the time away from the sleeping area. Nonetheless, the Cairn puppies will also try to follow their mother around and jump out of the whelping box.

Socialization Stage – 4 to 12 Weeks

This stage is very important for Cairn Terrier puppies as this is the socialization stage. As Cairn Terrier are known to be an independent dogs, early socialization is a must for them, be it animals or humans.

From this age, the puppies will start playing and jumping around with their littermates. Furthermore, the Cairn puppies will control their bowel movement on their own, which means the cleaning responsibility is on you now.

By the eighth week, Cairn Terrier would get familiar with the surrounding. It is the perfect time you socialize the puppy. From eighth to twelve weeks of age, you can start basic house training for your pups.

Ranking Stage – 3 to 6 Months

Ranking stage is where your Cairn Terrier acquire most of their personality traits. They will get affected by their playmates, both human and dogs. Moreover, they will be aware about the fact that their pack consists of both dogs and humans.

By this time, your Cairn Terrier might also want to dominate you however, you should teach them the difference between submission and dominance. Furthermore, they would require more attention and training to develop a positive behavior in them. Likewise, when they reach the age of four months old, you can send them to puppy training classes.

Adolescence – 6 to 18 Months

Your Cairn Terrier are no more puppies anymore. From this age, your puppy finally loses their puppy face. Your puppy will now lose their baby teeth and will grow even stronger and playful.

It is very important that you train them regularly to avoid negative behavior. By their growing age, you will now need to focus on their diet and nutrition as well.
