The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen or the GBGV is an alert and well-mannered breed of dogs that originated in France originally bred to trail hares in the terrains of the Vendée district of France.

The GBGV is known for its sweet-faced, long-eared a shaggy coat body. These days, they are mostly being used as house dogs.

Origin and History

The lower classes’ hunter of the Vendeé district required a hardy breed of dog with mental and physical stamina and a coat that resisted brambles of the dense, rocky, and thorny region of that district.

They needed a scent hound-type dog with short legs and through a lot of breeding and evolution, they were able to create a low-set dog in the 1700s. And by the end of the 19th century, the Basset Griffon Vendeén with both hardiness and short legs evolved as a part of the basset breeds of France.

The Club du Griffon Vendéen in France was founded in 1907 which recognized two varieties of the Basset Griffon Vendéen which were the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen and the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen that could hunt different games.

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen breed separated into its own standard and was considered a separate breed by the 1950s.
