The Pudelpointer is a versatile gundog breed originating for Germany. It is a rough-coated hunting and pointing breed that resulted as a cross between the English Pointer and the German hunting Poodle.

Origin & History

The Pudelpointer is fairly a new dog breed that developed in the 1800s. A German breeder Baron von Zedlitz has the credit for developing this breed. He developed the Pudelpointer crossing the English Pointer with the German hunting poodle (Pudel).

The resulted dog as what Baron believed was an ideal pointing, tracking and retrieving gundog. It was suitable to work on both land and water. Zedlitz achieved his goal over the course of 30 years of selective breeding by using over 100 different pointers with 7 specific Pudels.

In the United States, the Pudelpointer was first introduced in 1956. Though this breed has yet to be recognized by the AKC. It has been admitted into the Foundation Stock Service (as per March 2019) which is the first step for recognizing a breed.

Younger kids and toddlers are not so safe around the Pudelpointers as they have a strong prey drive. Therefore, it becomes very necessary to keep your kids and the dog under surveillance when together.
