The German Longhaired Pointers are known to be the oldest of the continental Pointers. They are believed to be descended from the Water Spaniels and the Scenthounds.
The first kennel clubs were established in the 1870s by the breeders and the pure breeding started in 1879 and was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 2006.
