American Staffordshire Terrier Puppies

American Staffordshire Terrier is a bold, medium-sized dog with a muscular and strong body. It is also known as a nanny dog that is suitable in a house with children as well. They can give birth to 5-10 puppies at a time. While the small-sized dogs matured fast which is within a year and a half, big dog breeds take time to mature.

If your American Staffordshire Terrier is giving birth to little puppies, you need to know about their behavior in different months. By knowing their requirements and actions, you can give them a proper caring and a healthy life.

Newborn

The newborn Amstaff Puppies are completely blind, deaf, and without teeth. They cannot walk, so they drag themselves towards their mother when they need warmth and food. The mother provides them with milk full of antibodies that protect them from harmful or deadly diseases.

Neonatal Stage (0-3 Weeks)

For about two weeks, the puppies spend the majority of their time sleeping and waking only when they are hungry. They are helpless and are fully dependant on their mother. They cannot pee or poop by themselves, so the mother stimulates their belly by licking which makes them defecate.

In the second week, the American Staffordshire Terrier puppies start to open their eyes and see the world around them vividly. By the third week, the ears will be open and they begin to get familiar with the sound of their mother and other littermates. They also get doubled the size they were born and starts developing sharp and small teeth.

Transitional Stage (3-8 Weeks)

The development process is still on and the American Staffordshire Terrier becomes more energetic and lively at this age. They become mischevious and the mother will teach them manners by growling at them whenever they become naughty. Their biting and mouthing increases as the teeth are at the process of growing when creates itching.

By 7-8 weeks, the puppies begin to wag their tail, bark, run and start eating puppy food. Around 6-7 weeks, the puppies should be given their first vaccination and worming. This is the time when the puppies will be leaving their mother’s milk gradually and move on to solid food.

Socialization Stage (8-20 Weeks)

During this stage, it is very important and necessary to teach the puppies about socialization. They also need basic obedience training, puppies manners, and basic commands. This is the age where the puppies will be more scared at the same time more acceptable of any people as a family member. Therefore, proper training and socialization with a variety of people and canines are necessary.

By the age of 3 months, the American Staffordshire grows to 10-14 kgs.

Juvenile Stage (5-8 Months)

This stage where the puppies are matured both physically and sexually is called the juvenile stage. They get bigger by this age losing their puppy face and getting more of an adult looks. Although they experienced their first heat at this time, it is not good for their health for either mating or breeding. Enroll them in more advanced training but avoid harsh treatment and forehand as they might get scared or aggressive.

Adolescent Stage (8-15 Months)

This is the period where the puppy is fully grown and turned into an adult American Staffordshire Terrier. They need more vigorous training and exercise for their mental stimulation. Teach them tricks and other instructions. It is time to switch their puppy food to adult food that includes the right supplements and complete balanced diets.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a protective, gentle, and kind to its master and family. They have a sweet temperament but raising them in a harsh environment can make them aggressive dogs. Therefore, love, understanding, and the right leadership are necessary while raising your dog.
