American Staffordshire Terrier is also known as Amstaff, is a muscular bull-type dog that stands 17-19 inches at shoulders and weigh 50-80 pounds.

Amstaff is one of the several breeds in a Pitbull group. This breed was recognized by American Kennel Club in 1963. Their life span is between 10-12 years.

American Staffordshire Terrier is a very active dog which requires a regular exercise to maintain their muscular tone. They are known as an aggressive dog but are very loving towards their family. Amstaff does great in a home with kids. They are loving and protective of kids. They are muscular breed and can sometimes play rough, so parents should supervise them while letting them play with kids.

When and Where to Start The Training?

Amstaff is a strong-willed dog due to which training requires a lot of patience and trust. Training is best when done at an early age. They do not trust strangers easily and sometimes find children threatening. Therefore, proper early socialization with people is needed and to ensure them that children are a great playmate, they need to be properly introduced and raised with them.

So, early and proper training is the most important component to raise a well-behaved, friendly and obedient Amstaff.

Amstaff should be trained in an open place with no other animals or people distraction. Teach them in a back yard, field or even in a park. Do not take them off leash as they might get engage in fight with other pets.

How to define task for your pet?

Make a routine of training time for your Amstaff and teach him accordingly. Use different words for different command to define a task for your dog. Do not use more than a word for a task as it might confuse them and they could never learn any command.

Gesturing with hands while using a certain word is another way of teaching your dog to learn the command faster. As for example, use your hand to call them, put your hand down pointing at the ground to command them to sit and point up to stand.

Socializing your Amstaff at an early age is very important as to teach them how to behave around strangers. It is important that your dog gets comfortable around different people and situation.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Positive Reinforcement means to train your dogs by giving rewards as treats or words praise for the command they follow and ignoring the command they do not follow.

Establish Leadership

Taking a leadership position at your dog is the best way to teach him all the thing you want him to learn. Your Amstaff should know you are the in-charge and a leader. If you can make the leadership impression on him, he will start to respect and obey you.

Socializing with Other Pets

Amstaff is an aggressive dog which can be very aggressive with other pets. If socialized early with a variety of pets, they can get along with them very well. Teach your dog to control their aggression in the presence of other dogs and keep their focus on you.
