The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound is a breed of dog originated in Germany in the early 20th century to trail wounded game using the advantage of its “cold nose” tracking ability.

It is also called Bayerischer Gebirgsschweisshund in native German language. This breed is indeed a cross of two breeds, the Bavarian Hound and the Hanover Hound.

Origin and History

The Bavarian Mountain Hound dog breed came from obsolete hunting scenthounds. Various breeds and types came from these original hounds, such as the Hanoverian Scenthound.

The Hanoverian Scenthound was crossed to Red Mountain Scenthounds to produce a lighter dog. In the 1870s, the Bavarian Mountain Hound was formed, a bloodhound breed of dog that could track the cold scent of wounded game in mountainous areas.

Toward the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, the Hanoverian Scenthound had evolved. It was the breed of choice by hunters in lower elevations.

After the advancements in hunting and firearms, a dog was needed after the prey had been shot to track down injured game (animals) in the more mountainous regions. The Hanoverian Scenthound was not suitable for the task because it was heavy.

To fill this need of a lighter and more limber hound, in the 1870s, the hunters crossed a Hanoverian Scenthound with a red Mountain Scenthound. They achieved what became the Bavarian Mountain Scenthound.

Today, the Bavarian Mountain Hunting Dogs are the classic hunting companion for professional hunters and gamekeepers. There is growing interest in this breed in today’s world with advanced hunting equipments.
