The Frisian Water Dog which is also known as Wetterhoun, Otterhoun, Dutch Spaniel is a medium-sized hunting dog. Although it is also known as Otterhoun, it is not to be confused with the Otterhound as both are different breeds with much similar name. They have a water-resistant coat that allows them to hunt in the water.

Frisian Water Dog is a well-balanced dog with thicker built than average. Their head is broad with oval-shaped eyes, medium length ears that fall on their cheek. It is a skilled hunting dog that also does well as a companion dog for active people.

Origin and History

The origin of the Frisian Water Dog is the Netherlands as a hunting dog that was used to hunt small mammals and waterfowl. It was developed around four hundred years ago Dutch province of Fryslan.

It was descended from Old Water Dog which is now extinct. It was nearly extinct in World War II but the fancier of this dog bring this breed back with careful breeding.

The American Kennel Club has not recognized the Frisian Water Dog yet. However, it has been registered in the United Kennel Club and Federation Cynologique Internationale as a gundog and water dog.

Temperament, Behavior, Personality

Temperament: The temperament of the Frisian Waterdog is active, alert, and quiet. They are a very active dog as they are a hunting dog that needs regular activities to keep them content and healthy. They are a quiet dog but are very alert of the things going on in the surrounding. Therefore, they are also great watchdogs that will look after your property and family.

Behavior: Frisian Water Dog does well if they get some job to a dog. If they do not get anything to do, they will get bored and become destructive. They will start chewing on stuff and barking continuously disturbing their neighbor. So, take them for hiking, jogging or just a walk around.

Personality: The personality of the Frisian Water Dog is friendly, energetic, smart, and loving. They are a very gentle breed that is loving towards their family but is fierce while hunting. Due to their affectionate and loving nature, they make an excellent companion for an active family.

Training Frisian Water Dog is not hard for an experienced dog owner who knows their temperament well. They respond well to a positive method of training where they get delicious treats and vocal praises as a reward. Start from obedience training and move to agility. They should be challenged both physically and mentally.

Yes, Frisian Water Dog gets along with children very well and are playful towards them. They are loving and gentle while playing with them so they both make great playmates for each other. However, proper supervision is always necessary so there is no harsh behavior from either party.
