The McNab Shepherd is a medium-sized dog breed that was bred as a herding dog. It is a sturdy dog with a longer body length that is not proportionate to the height. The ears stand either erect or are floppy while the eyes are almond-shaped and are set wide. They have a harsh coat that is weather-resistant.

With the very friendly and loving temperament that the McNab Shepherd has with its family, it makes an excellent family dog. However, it needs an active family that can meet its high energy and can involve it in regular physical activities. It does not do well in an apartment so only own this breed if you have a big space for him to run around.

Origin and History

The McNab Shepherd originated in Hopland, California as a herding dog. A breeder named Alexander McNab left his native country Scotland and moved to California. There he crossed various shepherd breeds with his Scottish Border Collie and that was how the McNab Shepherd was born.

Soon this breed became popular among the ranchers and was used widely by them for herding livestock and cattle. Today the McNab Shepherds are also kept as a family companion in an active family.

Is McNab Shepherd Child-Friendly?

The McNab Shepherd does very well with children of all ages due to its loving and gentle nature. They love being around kids and are also tolerant of their harsh behavior.

Close supervision is needed when they are together so the small children do not pinch or pull your dog which might lead to accidents.

Temperament, Personality, and Behavior

Temperament: The temperament of the McNab Shepherd is agile, protective, and intelligent. They need a highly active family who can provide them with regular activities. Their protective nature makes them an excellent guard dog and watchdogs that will always keep an eye out for something unusual in the surroundings.

Personality: The personality of McNab Shepherd is affectionate, hardworking, and independent. They are very much devoted and loving towards their master. They bond well with the family as well as other pets in the house.

Trainability

The McNab Shepherd needs a master who is experienced. They are smart breeds so training is not difficult. However, they are independent in nature and if you fail to establish leadership upon them, they might take themselves as a pack leader which will make training them challenging.

Therefore, early training when they are still puppies is recommended. Start with basic training and use positive methods to train them. It will motivate them to be focused on the training session and they will be more obedient.

Health Issues

The McNab Shepherd is generally a healthy dog breed with some genetic health issues.

Lens Luxation: This health problem is a common health issue that is inherited by the McNab Shepherd. In this condition, the lens of your dog moves either in the front or on the back of the pupil. This can cause blindness and can be painful with time. However, early treatment can cure this problem and the surgery is painless.

Hip Dysplasia: In this condition, the hip bones of your dog are displaced from their original place. It can make physical movement painful and can make day-to-day life uncomfortable for your dog.
