The Schweizer Laufhund is a dog breed of hound type. It is a medium-sized dog breed that is also known as Swiss Hound. The Swiss Hound has four varieties which are Bernese Hound, Bruno Jura Hound, Lucernese Hound, and Schwyz Hound.

Although Schweizer Laufhund falls on the category of a hunting dog, it makes a great companion for a loving and active family that are involved in physical activities regularly.

Origin and History

Schweizer Laufhund was originated in Switzerland as a hunting dog that used to hunt a variety of small game where hunting hare was most common. There were five varieties of the Schweizer Laufhund where the Thurgovian Hound is extinct leaving only the four.

The FCI recognized this breed in 1933 as the breed of the scenthound group.

Temperament, Behavior, and Personality

Temperament: The temperament of the Schweizer Laufhund is affectionate, friendly, and gentle. They are excellent hunters in the field but at home, they are a loving family dog which makes an excellent choice for an experienced and active family.

Behavior: Schweizer Laufhund is a hunting dog that can sometimes have the instinct to hunt small animals and can trail off. Therefore, it is necessary to keep them in a fenced yard where they will not run away or harm small animals.

Personality: The personality of the Schweizer Laufhund is alert, loving, and very active. They make a great watchdog due to their alert behavior. If they sense anything unusual going on in the surrounding, they will bark and warn you about it.

Schweizer Laufhund can become very challenging to train but for an experienced dog owner who knows its temperament can train this breed well.   • Hip Dysplasia: It is a genetic problem that it inherits from the parents. When the hip bone of your dog is dislocated or underdeveloped, it is due to hip dysplasia.
