The Yorkinese is a medium-sized designer dog. It is a lap dog and is best in a family that needs a toy type dog to sit on their lap. The Yorkinese is developed by crossing two small-sized breeds, Yorkshire Terrier and the Pekingese.

The Yorkinese is an active dog that does great as a family dog. They have a dense, thick, and long hair that needs constant grooming. The head is of semi-squared shaped with the lively looking eye. They have a long mustache, eyebrow, and the tail is bushy. Even though they are small, they can be a strong and powerful dog.

Origin and History

The Yorkinese is believed to be developed in the United States somewhere around 1980. It is a designer dog that is created by crossing the Yorkshire Terrier and the Pekingese. This designer dog does not have much history but we can look at the history of its parents.

The Yorkshire Terrier is originated in the 1800s in Yorkshire, England. It was used by the working-class group to hunt and control rats and vermin in their clothing mills. It was very good at its work and was famous among the people at that time.

The Pekingese is a dog from ancient China that was kept by the royalty and nobles as lap dogs. They had a great history of survival. When the British seized Chinese palace, the Chinese guard had to kill all the royal pets. Luckily, five Pekingese were saved and sent to Queen Victoria and those five were used to breed more.

Is Yorkinese Child-Friendly?

Yorkinese is child-friendly dogs and can get along with them very well. They are active and energetic, who enjoy playing with children. They can be great playmates for children but their energy may not be compatible with small kids and toddlers. Therefore, while letting Yorkinese and small children play, close supervision is always necessary. However, they do well with older kids who can handle their energy.

Temperament: The Yorkinese is an active, loving, and affectionate dog that makes a great lap dog and play companion too for family. It is a happy dog that loves playing and cuddling with its human being. They are a friendly dog that enjoys being with their family.

Behavior: The Yorkinese thrives for human company and wants to be with them most of the time. If they are left alone for a long period of time, they can get separation anxiety and can be depressed. Therefore, do not leave them on their own for a long time.

Personality: They have a bold personality of the Pekingese and fearless and confident like the Yorkshire Terrier. They do not get along with other canine but if raised together and socialized from an early age, they can get along well. Therefore, socialization is very important.

Trainability

Training Yorkinese can be a bit challenging as they are stubborn and has a mind of their own. Establish a firm and consistence leadership on them. Be patient with them and do not use force hand or harsh words on them as they might get aggressive and might even bite you. Use positive methods of training to motivate them and reward them with treats.

Hip Dysplasia: It is a condition where the hip joints of your dog are either underdeveloped or dislocated. It can cause pain on the back making it difficult to move from one place to another. It is genetic so you have to check on the health condition before buying the dog from the breeder.
Eye and Ear infection: It is caused due to the contact with dirt and dust that slowly infect the eyes and the ears. It can be itchy and painful. To prevent your dog from getting eyes and ears infection, always clean the area gently.
