Today the Collie Dog Breed is more likely to be a pampered pet than an all-around farm dog. It adapts well to a variety of home environments as long as it has plenty of exercises.

The Collie Breed enjoys relaxing around the house with family as well as running and playing outside with the kids. The herding instincts are still strong, so it’s not unusual for the collie to gather children and pets, chase cars and bark.

It is said that movies and television series made the Collie a popular dog in the United States. Unfortunately,  extreme popularity leaves Collie open to the bane of all favorite breeds. The loyal Collie excels as an assistance or therapy dogs.

Origin and history

The Collie is a native of Scotland and has been called as Collis, Colley, Coally,  and Coaly names that probably derive from col or coll, the anglo-saxon word for the black. Some historians think that the names came from the colley, the scotish black faced sheep, that the collie dog used to guard.

Original Collies were closer in size and shape to today’s border collies and they were predominately black. Herding ability was more important than appearances, so the dogs varied a great deal in looks.

The first Collie dog breed was imported to the united states in 1879. The collie club of America was formed on august 1886, which makes it one of the oldest canine specialty club.

Are they child friendly?

Yes! The Collie Dog is child – friendly which is highly protective of the kids in her family watching over them and keeping them safe from danger just Lassie did to Timmy.

As with every breed, teach children how to approach, touch dogs and always supervise any interactions between the dogs and children to prevent any biting, ear pulling or tail pulling. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he is eating or sleeping. No dogs should be left unsupervised with children.

Behavior, temperament and personality

The  Collie Dog is sweet, friendly and gentle. It is a family dog and enjoys being part of all household activities. They are fond of kids and enjoy playing with them and protectively watching over them.

Temperament is affected by the number of factors including heredity, training, and socialization. Puppies with good temperament are curious and playful, willing to approach people and be held by them. Socialization helps  your puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Enrolling into a puppy kindergarten is a great start.

The male Collie dog has height of 24-26 inches and female has height of 22-24inches. Collies weight 50-70 pounds.

Collie Dog is very smart and easy to train. Puppy classes are required for general socialization and training. They love training and learning and make a better companion and build a good relationship with the owner and family.

Collies learn on positive teaching methods. They excel in obedience, agility, and herding They may be stubborn but are trainable. They are outgoing than aloof.
