Brittany was first recognized as a distinct breed in 1907 in France and the first record of Brittany dogs are visual paintings dating to the 17th century. It is said that the Brittany dog takes the name from the Celtic area of northwest France which lie just across the English channel from wales.

It’s easy to see some common characteristics of the Brittany and the Welsh Springer, it’s probably had, common ancestors.

Modern Brittanys started to take shape in the mid-1800s and it is said that they were the result of a cross between a white and mahogany female and a lemon and white male brought to Brittany for shooting. Brittany ranks 30th among the breeds recognized by American Kennel Club.
