Field Spaniels love people and are eager to please, loyal and loving. Sometimes the water-loving nature comes out of them and they may use their water bowl as for playing, making quite a mess around the house.

Origin and History

The Field Spaniel was developed in England during the second half of the 19^th century in an effort to produce a medium-sized hunting dog that could work equally well on land, in water or in dense climate. The Field Spaniel was created at the time that dog shows were becoming popular.

The AKC registered its first Field Spaniel in 1894, but when a fire destroyed most of this breed in 1909, the breed almost disappeared in the United States. The last registration of a Field Spaniel occurred in 1930.

Are Field Spaniel child friendly?

Yes, Field Spaniels are child-friendly and they love to play with children, but they should be handled properly. Like with every breed always supervise the interaction between Field Spaniels and young children to prevent any ear tugging and tail pulling of either party.

Always teach your child how to interact with Field Spaniel dogs. They should be taught not to disturb the dog when it is sleeping or taking food. The dogs can bite the children when doing so. Taking the dogs to the kinder garten classes is another option.

The personality of Filed Spaniel can be developed by enrolling him to puppy kindergarten classes. Inviting visitors and taking the dog to busy parks and gardens can develop his social skills. This can also make them active and require exercise.

The Field Spaniel is a very docile, loving breed and they have a strong desire to please their owners. They typically do well with dog training, particularly if it begins early when the dog is of 6-8 weeks.

The Field Spaniels are somewhat sensitive, they do best with positive dog training methods of praise and reward. This breed should be well-socialized from a young age to overcome wariness towards strangers.
