Early in the 19th century the British breeders began dividing them into specific breeds: English Springer, Welsh Springer, Cocker, Field, Sussex, Clumber and Irish Water Spaniel.

The English Cocker Spaniel Club of America was founded in 1936 and became one of the very popular breeds in the U.S. But it is a more popular breed in the United Kingdom.
